If you’re like most Americans, you use your microwave oven nearly every day. Microwave ovens have certainly earned their place in the kitchen – they save time, energy and money. But have you ever stopped to think about how a microwave oven works?
Well, that’s a topic of another day but in this post, we’ll talk about what happens if you microwave a rock?
Let’s find out!
What Happens If You Microwave A Rock?
A few years ago, one of the biggest hoaxes took place on the internet. A set of images were uploaded to social media that claimed to show a rock that could be microwaved into a perfect sphere, or they become soft or they turn in to crystals.
People tried it, and nothing happened. Some people even tried harder by microwaving it in superheated ovens, or blasting it with fire. Nothing changed.
So the answer to this question is, nothing will happen if you microwave a rock in oven. In fact, it’ll not change even a bit and all the microwaves just pass through it.

1. Microwaves Will Just Pass
Nothing will happen if you microwave a rock. The microwaves are just like any other form of radiation, and will not cook the rock. That’s because the microwaves can’t transfer enough energy to heat up the rock.
Microwave radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that falls in between infrared and radio waves on the electromagnetic spectrum. Microwaves have wavelengths ranging from as short as one 30 centimeter to 1 millimeter, which makes them longer than infrared but shorter than radio waves.
Microwaves will simply pass through the rock and nothing will happen. It might get a little hot though.
2. Consider It As Nothing
Microwaves will not affect rock. Microwaves are a form of radiation that travels at the speed of light. it is known to cause effects on many substances, but for some reason cannot affect rock. we know that microwaves have been in use for quite some time, and have caused changes in many different substances over the years.
But you can consider putting rock in a microwave experiment as nothing. As this will not change anything on the rock surface nor it’ll turn soft or crystallize as shown in various fake images on the Internet.
3. Rumor
Fooling people with a fake news piece can be very entertaining for some people, but it’s also a bad way to expose a lot of people to your brand and get more views intentionally. This is what happens with the rock in microwave and people made thumbnails saying it’ll turn:
- Crystal
- Softens
- And so on
But you should keep in mind that it’s all rumor and nothing like this happen in real experiments.
